Meditation in an orchard
Highland, Southern
The nose seemed gentle at first – stewed apple and custard, Party Ring biscuits and strawberry jam – then hints of wood sap, white pepper and gooseberry bushes arrived. The neat palate was mouth-watering with Mon Cheri chocolates, Anthon Berg plum marzipans and kirsch; a tickle of nutmeg, cinnamon and oak to finish. Water enhanced the fruits and the wood on the nose – orchard fruits on the bough, hazel coppice, old style matchboxes and tobacco pouches, raspberry jam and New Berry jellied fruits. The palate’s initial Nutella and marron glacé shifted to lebkuchen and gingerbread spiciness, tangerine and raspberry vinegar astringency.
