Spiced nuts in a tea chest
Speyside, Spey
This nose is fresh (laundry, new wood) and sweet (marshmallow, fudge, pineapple cake, tined pears in custard) but with a vaguely herbal, leafy aspect. The palate gets spiced nuts and roasted chestnuts, tea chests, chilli chocolate, dark honey and toffee, with a slightly tannic oak and leather finish. The reduced nose still gets the laundry, but now also picks up a pine forest floor, mushrooms and wasabi – and some lime sweets. With water, the palate is sweet and pleasantly warming – spiced peanut or almond brittle, light fruit chutney and Werthers Original (butterscotch). It has depth and kick but also layers of interest.
