Lighting the scented beeswax candles illuminated the sumptuous aromas surrounding us. On a heavy oak table stood old leather bound books and a rich fruitcake bursting with sultanas, figs and dates and generously spiced with cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Soft fudge and sticky cinder toffee sat beside manuka honey, spicy rye bread and juicy blood oranges. We then noticed the most extravagant black forest gateau, packed with dark cherries and topped with clotted cream and opulent chocolate that was so dark it seemed to absorb the light in the room. After spending 16 years in an ex-Bourbon barrel it was transferred to an ex-red wine hogshead for the remainder of its maturation.
