Fiftysomething Shades

For many years, the Lowlands had only a handful of distilleries. Thankfully, this is no longer the case. A renaissance of Lowland distilling is yielding some brilliant spirits and Distillery 167 is one such example. Full term maturation in an Oloroso cask has created a richness that Sherry lovers will cherish. Luscious dried fruits, liqueurs and spiced cakes are underpinned by bramble fruits and chocolate. Next time you're in Glasgow, make time for a trip to this distillery that's steeped in Glasgow whisky-producing tradition.

Tasting Panel Notes
A rich and dense aroma we agreed, full of furniture polish, fig rolls, cherry liqueur, strawberry jam, chocolate and peanut brittle, and tiny wee hints of lovage and toasted fennel seed. Water brought classical dry sherry aromas, some cola syrup, singed pastry, black forest gateau and aged armagnac. The palate was initially autumnal, with ginger bread, Jamaica cake, more cherry liqueur and black liquorice. Water sweetened everything slightly, delivering notes of clementine dipped in milk chocolate, sweeter liquorice, date molasses and pears baked in sweet wine.
