Bottle selected by world-renowned Scottish whisky expert and writer Charlie MacLean*
The colour of amontillado sherry, the first impression on the nose is of coated cardboard, new carpets, woollen mill (slightly industrial, oily, with lanolin) – nose-drying in effect. A drop of water softens the nose and raises buttery toffee (butterscotch, Werther’s Originals), but the aroma is still shy and reserved. The texture and taste are revelations! Full-bodied and oily; and sweeter and more complex than expected, with dark toffee, pecan nuts and a trace of sea salt in the long, spicy finish. After 15 years in an ex-bourbon hogshead, we transferred this whisky into a 1st fill Sauternes hogshead.
