The nose wafts caramel, toffee, syrup sponge, treacle, prunes, fig rolls and ginger snaps; maybe some orange peel and geranium aromatherapy. The rich, deep palate has plum jam, marzipan, bitter chocolate and dark toffee, with reverberations of clove, oak and leather to finish. The reduced nose - wow! - an apothecary's shop, brandy-soaked sultanas, sticky gingerbread and beautiful dunnage wood - it seduces and invites fantasies. The palate remains intense - rich sherry, treacle, fruit cake and dark plums baked with muscovado and clove; then lingering echoes of dark, indulgent sweetness. After 13 years in ex-bourbon wood we transferred this into a second-fill PX hogshead.
