The Lowland Festival Collection
Our first week of Festival Season continues with two stunning casks from the Lowlands! This is a region on the rise with over one dozen new distilleries producing whisky. Its past is littered with now closed distilleries as well, sites that once produced incredible malt you may only bid on at auction these days. But a few have stayed the course over the centuries like today’s offering. Distillery 5 Rare Release Around the Clock is a marriage of 18-year-old casks sourced from first-fill ex-bourbon barrels and has everything you would expect of an elegant, older Lowland whisky – in this case it’s triple distilled, with narrow cut points and matured in active bourbon wood to bring an absolutely delicious “Sweet, Fruity & Mellow” flavour profile to your glass. Age and beauty abound in this classic bottling for your collection!
Our celebratory bottle is joined by a whisky that pays homage to the agricultural importance of the Lowlands. While barley was grown in pockets of other regions, the landscape of the Lowlands lent itself to the production of vast amounts of grain, including wheat, oats and barley. Thus, many a grain distillery calls the Lowlands home. Cask No. G10.36 Tantalisingly Tasty started in ex-bourbon wood before transfer to a second-fill heavy toast/medium char hogshead. This additional maturation of 5 years (!) yields ripe notes of vanilla, maple and brown sugar with plenty of smoked bacon, school desk and rancio to make your palate understand what excellent grain whisky is all about.
