Distillery Dive #24: Sherry Blossoms
Distillery Dive: #24 is back for a sherry-fueled flavour adventure! Our latest Distillery Dive highlights a trio of sensational malts from an all-time member favourite and jewel of the Speyside. Let’s dive into this flight of single malts that exemplify the importance of cask maturation.
In October of 2018, SMWS spirit manager Euan Campbell identified a handful of casks from Distillery #24 that had been aged in Oloroso sherry butts for 10 years. He decided this collection of whisky had a different destiny than the usual single cask release. These Oloroso sherry butts would be vatted (married together) and ‘re-casked’ for another 2 years of aging in different first-fill wood. This experimental approach to cask management unearthed an utterly delicious and unique world of flavour, highlighting the impact and influence these additional maturations have on one same original whisky. Today’s releases focus on Oloroso sherry and PX sherry casksused for additional maturation, offering a full-throttle sherry-bombing experience! Each cask is equally decadent whilst bringing their unique flavour to the table.
Cask No. 24.159 Past glories delves into the meatier side of the spectrum with jerky, brisket and salami being served up with mole sauce and fig chutney. Cask No. 24.160 Baked treats in a humidor presents riper fruit-forward notes of plums, prunes and apples with honey, maple and toffee richness to sweeten the deal. Whilst these two casks were aged in Oloroso sherry, Cask No. 24.165 Vintage clothes saw its second maturation in PX cask. With redolent aromas and flavours of Christmas pudding, Nutella and rum raisin fudge on display, this is another stellar dram that will make sherried whisky dreams come true!
Due to limited quantities of these casks, please limit one bottle of each expression per member, whilst supplies last.
